Phonics
Before attempting to learn letter sounds, we believe it is necessary to have a big focus on phase 1 phonics, which involves listening and attention. Children need to be ready to learn, in order to achieve, and it is fundamental that this learning begins with fun games designed to help children focus on sounds and listening.
Phase 1 of Letters and Sounds concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2 in their reception year at school. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.
